How to Select the Best Industrial UPS for Your Application

Industrial UPS  is designed for harsh industrial environments such as plants, mining areas, oil&gas, chemical,power generation industries, manufacturing workshops, offshore operating platforms, etc. In these industrial environments, equipments are exposed to more extreme conditions where there is a lot of dust, lack of advanced heating and cooling control (HVAC) and the power quality is poor. So power applications in these environments require a higher level of power protection. Then how to select a UPS for your industrial application? Here are 4 steps to start the selection.

Firstly, safty should come first. 

Considering the interruption of AC power may cause a risk of injury to people or property,  safety should come first when selecting your industrial UPS. That includes the safety of whatever process or production you need to protect as well as the safety of your employees or members of the public. Secondly, figure out the voltage and phase of your equipments. 

Proper matching of the voltages and phasing to and from the UPS and maintenance Bypass Switch (MBS) is crucial in preventing damage to equipment. A single-phase industrial UPS has a single input and output of 120Vac (for Canada and the U.S.) or 230V(for Asia or other regions) while a three-phase UPS can be subdivided into three-phase input/three-phase output UPS system and three-phase input/single phase output system types. Plan carefully accroding to the technical requirements of the equipments you want to protect. 

Thirdly, pay attention to the battery.

Having the capability of extending battery backup time from a couple of minutes to multiple hours is crucial for critical applications to remain powered on until shutdown sequences are complete or generator/utility power is available. Normally, a UPS with standard configuration has 5 minutes backup time. But if you need a longer backup, you can add extra batteries. It is not difficult to calculate the number of batteries you need but it is difficult to find qualified batteries for extreme conditions. Because most VRLA batteries have a service life of fewer than 9 months if they are used at a temperature higher than 50ºC (122ºF) environment. You should choose an adaptable battery pack as an essential task for choosing UPS.

Finally, choose UPSs according to different industrial environments. 

For example, in a dusty environment, you should choose a dust-proof UPS. For oil and gas offshore drilling environments that are usually exposed to operations that cause power interference, you should choose a high-reliability industrial UPS to avoid common risks such as connecting high current loads and disconnecting load generators.
